I just installed a CRT Performance HEI distributor. Their documentation confirms the #1 spark plug location on the cap:

Post 34 on this thread - your number 3 is where number 1 should be.

It's tough to diagnose things from a few states away. (Where are you?) If you can get up to speed then it dies off and slows it sounds more like a fuel issue.

I would start with fuel delivery, if ignition is all correct. Filters partially plugged, fuel pump volume and pressure, carb float level too low, etc.

I'm beginning to believe it's air-fuel mixture problem but I'm no carburetor pro and have no clue what to do to fix it

Old thread here but I will awaken it from its slumber. I was searching about swapping in an HEI and came across this. Very interesting. So I checked 71 out and sure enough, mine is not right according to this thread. Then I remembered that the vac advance canister seemed to be a problem when I did this a billion years ago. Fan interference or something because of no fan spacer. At least that’s what think I recall. But I have an electric fan so maybe I should fix this after all these years. Maybe it will help wake up an engine that never performed the way I thought it should?????
