I was reading another post on this forum that stated that when setting up an oddfire dist. you must use one of the posts in the dist. cap that has the short contact inside. They stated that if you use one of the long contacts as your #1 cylinder that the engine will not run properly.
    Is this true?

The reason I am asking is that I am having an intermittent miss at cruising speed. I have asuumed that it was caused by the carb but now am beginning to wonder if it could be a dist problem.

No - you MUST move 2 spaces to keep the 'even - odd' positions in the cap correct.

However, since the timing will be set from the number 1 - the shortest contact should be used as you could get the problem you describe under the right situation.

Think on this - if you use a longer contact to set the timing, spark can occur anywhere along it's length. This may make the spark on a shorter contact out of phase (or out of range) and it will not happen properly.

Short answer - not true - but in my opinion - a 'best practice' to avoid what it looks like your getting.

Wow that was fast. And it makes sense. I guess I'll give it a try, at least it won't cost me anything (unlike every other thing I do to this Jeep) I'll let you know if it cures my problem.

    Thanks loads,
    Curtis

    Hey Worloch,
I changed #1 cylinder to a short post in the cap but it didn't seem to make any difference on my intermittent sputtering. It may be idleing a tiny bit smoother now or it may just be my imagination.

Oh well, I guess I'll go back to the carb. and keep looking.
    Thanks for the help.

Did you put a light on each plug wire as it's running and look for a miss?

I did this, even tried it a different RPM's. Detected no miss.
I still think my problem is in the carb.
