I know it been done before, but is there any interest in a writeup of another jeep build? I have the worst jeep as far as gearing goes... a 77 cj 5..
I'm collecting parts for a tranny swap and power steering conversion. Its going to take a long time so I wasnt sure if I should just wait till its done to post or post in real time....
let me know.... also , photobucket is down for some reason.. is there another good site?

I agree, do it in real time. I actually started mine before I even got my parts for everything. Good luck!

well i've been collecting parts for the 77 cj5 buildup.... I wanted to add a t18 tranny so I waited for a half price day at the local pic n pull and found a 78 f250 that had the tranny I was looking for...65 bucks plus core. First step... a good cleanup..

    nice tech site Jim!
thanks for posting that... did you post anything when you were building yours?
I'm the farthest thing from a mechanic, but I wanna build my jeep instead of throwing money at someone to do it for me.... :stout:

wow, lots of good stuff... I'll keep my build posted. I'm mostly buying the tools I'm gna need for my build. I've got plenty of hand tools. so now I just bought snap ring pliers, I'm getting a parts washer and a press in the next couple of weeks. I'm also getting the parts together for a power steering conversion... I fought with a stripped bolt for days... finally took a heat gun to it and boiled out the threadlock... came right out.
anyone that has any hints or tricks please feel free to post them. I'll post a pic or two of my jeep.:D

build of the T18 starts about page 70 of my build thread......biggest issue was removing/installing the snap rings/collars...........get the right tool or it's a freakin bear, regular snap ring pliers don't cut it.........
Take your time, follow the directions and post up if you need help

huge size difference between the t150 and the t18... for those that have done the swap; is there clearance problems at the floor board? should the skid plate be lowered and how much?
I would imagine since jeep offered these as an option that a one inch spacer between the skid plate and frame, as well as moving the skid plate to the back set of holes in the frame would be all thats necessary?

I didn't have any issues with height, I just moved the cross member back. I ended up drilling new holes since the back set didn't match close enough. I have the V8, it might be different if you have the 6.

So heres what i find when I pop the cover... the markings on the cover tag are.. 999433 3.73 41.11.
the numbers on the carrier are 913A127 5M9.
    and the numbers on the ring gear are 1 10 72 dana 18515 A3E 10 41.11
can anyone decipher this for me....
any info on this axle would be appreciated... looks like a trac lok.. not what I was hoping for...

The numbers on the ring gear are just telling you the gear ratio and im purdy sure the 1 10 72 means that it was built in january 10th 1972. Please correct me somebody if im wrong since axle stuff is somthing im learning as we speak.

    Yep, 1972, 3.73:1 ratio.
Kinda looks like a Power lock from here, but Jeep wasn't using them anymore in '72 AFAIK.

My 44 that I pulled out of my '72 had some sort of traction aid in the rear...but she was purdy warn out by the time I pulled it. The power lock was a sort of clutch pack/limited slip and not a hard locker correct?
