I recently got my 69 CJ back on the road after many years of sitting.... Prior to doing so I changed/upgraded all of the following.

The vehicle runs fine and has plenty of power, although I am not sure what it is suppose to feel like.... It idles fine around 900 rpm and accelerates fine... But the sound of the exhaust and the engine sounds like it is missing a cylinder randomly. I shot a video of timing line where you can see that it appears to misfire; the audio is worthless. I know that it won't be a steady rhythm because of the "oddfire" sequence but it still appears off. Half way through the video you can see the affects of retarding and advancing the timing. I must say that I have little to no experience setting the timing on a vehicle but have read dozens of posts here on how to do so. My assumption is that I don't have the cap on correctly because of the different lobes on the inside of the cap.

    Any guidance is appreciated.

Back off the fast idle screw and set idle at 550-600 or 650. Set timing to 5* BTDC and recheck idle speed and reset to 550-650. with the engine running, move your timing light pick-up to nr#1 wire (make sure the inductive pick-up is not near any other plug wire) and shine the light at an easy to see dark place and watch the light for steady flashing. Move to the next plug wire doing the same as before. You will see the break-down in fire quite easily when you hit the right plug wire. Note the cylinder. The miss-fire can be caused by several different things such a faulty plug, low compression, faulty lifter, bent push-rod etc.

Thanks walt... I will check that out.

I thought I saw on here that idle speed was 800-900 but looking at the FSM it is 650-700 RPM

I checked each plug wire with the timing light... All flash consistent but wire #1. It is consistent in the way it ignites but has 3 fast bursts every ~5th time.

    Clear as mud?

Here is a picture of the distributor cap I am using. With there being some contacts shorter than others does it matter where I place #1 TDC?

This is a very good question. Might solve my backfire problem also. I am starting 1 at one of the long ones. It is not working to well.

Ok pulled the dist again brought up TDC marked the short one to the left of the plug in and yes sir smoothed right out no backfire. So yes it does make a difference.

According to the above link step #8 it is the one just to the right of 12v B+ plug.... which means I am off one; I guess.

I may have to get a new cap as I modified mine a little to fit without hitting the intake. I had to grind the intake a little as well.

I had to grind the intake and one of the plastic hold downs. I guess either one of the short ones will work as #1 but none of the others. I was going nuts trying to figure out what I did wrong.

And it makes sense now that to time it right it has to be a short one.

Not sure why changing your #1 plug position helped. (any post on the dist. will work for the #1 plug) But glad your Jeep is running good.

I changed the position of #1 and it didn't make a difference... maybe slightly smoother.
