F Head AMP light on dash weird behavior

Hi All,

Been driving my 58 CJ5 for short hops around my neighborhood, it is not "legal" so it does not go far but I do get to third regularly and up to maybe 35 MPH...

I have to jump it every time b/c I need a battery that actually holds a charge.
when we first fired it up I checked the charge at the terminals and it appeared that the generator was working.

OK so with that as a preface, usually once it fires up the AMP light goes OUT completely. Not so this afternoon.

I started it, and the light dimmed but did not go out. As it LOWERED in revs, the light tried to go out but not all the way.
So we drove around the neighborhood, and the light stayed on through all gears, headlights on or off, it did not change in brightness. Then as I was driving it back through my yard, banging around in 4wd, the light went out completely and stayed out til I shut it off.

Generator crapping out? Just a REALLY weak battery? Loose wire that banging around in the yard allowed to re-contact? Thoughts?

 

did the light come back on when you turned the key on? sounds like a loose wire, but the bulb could have burned out when it went out.........

 

Also check for loose fan belt. Should not be able to spin the gen pulley with fingers.
