I have two of these hangers connected to the rear frame cross brace and would like to know what they were used for? I'm talking about the rusty piece just to the left of the black painted metal. Both hangers are identical and look original. One points to the right side at about 45 degree down angle and the other points to the left side at about 45 degree down angle. My jeep is a 1970 cj5.

It's for an exhaust pipe and/or muffler.
It's probably not original. The multiple slots in the hanger is typical of aftermarket.
The original hangers might be a pin welded to the top of the frame (at least I see that on my '71 model).

It appears as though at some time during the jeeps life they had dual exhaust and thought a hanger right at that spot would be a cracker-jack of an idea.
it's a "universal" hanger Job, and doesn't look OEM, (even though Jeep did weird things)
Un bolt it and put it aside, if your like me, next week you'll need SOME PART of that hanger for something!

It's a jeep, it's not supposed to look, "complete", it always a "work in progress"!:)

Definitely an aftermarket exhaust hanger. Not factory equipment.
