use a puller for the pitman and just disassemble the first joint past the box in the linkage.

steering link should have a cotter pin that comes out, then a large flat head screwdriver to back off the end plug. best to remove the box and column together as a unit, the shaft has the worm gear made onto the end (all one piece) thinking 3 bolts in the top of the box will let the column come off, the clamp wont let the column come off, X2 on a puller for the pitman arm. I have had one apart, that was last year, and the only thing i was trying to salvage was the column and tube for later use on a saginaw conversion.

welll i took the three bolts off on the top of the steering box and i cant get it to come apart. it comes out about an inch and it feels like it catches on something. but if i pull the steering wheel off i should just pull the whole column out towards the ground?

I just did this a few months ago, leave the pitman arm, the only way you're pulling that off is after it comes out, You need something called a pickle fork and even then i don't think there is enough clearance....

Undo the very back of the steering arm that runs parallel to the left side of the engine block (pitman arm is mounted to it) forward to the steering linkage (wrong terms probably). It has a cotter pin and then it unscrews with a big phillips head then be ready for the spacers that will fall out. The [itman arm connection will come out of the side/back of that arm..
Then remove the floor plates around the steering shaft that goes up to the steering wheel and disconnect the horn wire. Unbolt the two main bolts holding the box in place and pull the whole thing out thru the cabin.

Then post here that you need a new/used steering box and someone will sell you one that works for less than the repair kit!

it is pretty easy once you give up on the pitman arm!

Yep, exactly what happened to mine. I bought a used box with shaft AND steering wheel off another lister for $50, repair kit is $65, so ask around before you bother rebuilding that one it is a bit of a PITA.

    Congrats!

I got my rebuild kit through Krage Motorsports. Had the right pieces and was shipped to me quick.

They carry a sector shaft kit that comes with the bushings. I think it is $89.50 for your jeep. You might be able to find a complete Ross box etc that's in good shape from the guys on the forum here. Check the classifieds because guys are always parting out or upgrading to power steering etc.
