    Hi all,

Where would be a good place to locate a coolant overflow bottle? I was thinking I would mount it on the inside of the fender, as close to the radiator as possible.

Does the height of the location matter? I presume it's better to be as close to the same height of the outlet from the rad...

Just for reference, it's an AMC 360 in there...

    Thoughts, as always welcomed...

    Thanks

I believe the default is on the right side fender and the cap height is just a little lower than the radiator cap height.

I thought the bottle or the screw tabs were angled to match the fender...but I could be wrong.

I expect there is plenty of space on the fender under under the battery - on the passenger side, like the washer bottle. I don't think it matters how close it is to the radiator - as long as you can fill it easily.

    This is a good question.
I want to put one on my '74.
Anyone know of the top of their head what year they started putting the overflow reservoirs on?
Mine looks to have not had one, just a tube that went behind the drivers side headlight

Not sure what year they became standard, but the stock location when they did was on the left (driver's) side fender well. If you buy a stock replacement for an 80's model CJ on Ebay or such, it should fit in that same location perfectly.

    Thanks guys,

i have plenty of space on the battery side, which is the same side that the vent comes out.

now for a really stupid question...

I bought one of these: [IMG]

But which way up should I mount it? does it go horizontally or vertically? Should the cap be at the top or bottom?

    Once again, all ideas welcomed.

Is that a coolant overflow bottle? I've never seen one like it. I take it there are no instructions.

I believe that the way they work is that when the fluid is hot and under pressure then it expands and some gets by the pressure cap and flows into the coolant bottle. It also works in reverse so that when it cools down it might actually pull coolant from the bottle back into the radiator.

I think there are two types of coolant bottles. When the radiator overflow hose goes to the top of the bottle then there is usually a straw inside the bottle cap that continues to the bottom of the bottle. If there is no straw then the overflow usually gets coolant from the bottom so that the return flow is gravity fed.

In either case, the cap is at the top so that you can add coolant when necessary.

At least that's how I've seen it on other vehicles.

Why would you want one? The factory system purges out the excess and leaves an air pocket at the top for expansion. After the initial purge it doesn't leak a drop. No need to redesign the wheel here.

For one, it keeps the radiator completely full at all times. It also allows you to check the coolant level without having to open the radiator cap.

On my '75 I replaced the old cracked one with one from NAPA. Works great and I have not had to add coolant in over a year.

Patricks' points are right on target.

It also keeps bugs from climbing in if you park your jeep for a while and it keeps dirt and dust out when it's a closed system........

For another it keeps antifreeze from being purged out onto the ground. At the risk of sounding like a treehugger, I think it's always a good thing to avoid sending toxic chemicals like ethylene glycol straight into the environment when it can easily be avoided.

    Yep....

My 72' had the container on the passenger side of the radiator mounted on the fenderwell... the original was mounted with top level with radiator fill cap. Recently replaced it with a NAPA spec that is working fine.

While out last week.... we noticed Advance has the overflow bottles with adjustable wire housing on sale... in two different size. Good deal.
