1968 cj5 225 v6 stock 3spd dana 20 t-case....iam looking into a trans swap and wondering if its possiable to swap in an AX15 5spd...i have looked into t-18 and np435 swaps but iam not goin to be rock crawling anytime soon so the granny 1st is useless to me...as well i might possiably look into a m-21 muncie swap. but iam really apt to find out if an AX15 will swap in... if anyone could give me some info on a good tranny to swap in that wont brake the bank getting the adapters or has any good ideas that would be great! primarialy the jeep will be a part time driver and backroad mudder....thanks in advance for any and all info!!

Dana 18/Dana 20 both would require adapters as well as the engine. I forgot about those.

Anyway, I'd just get a Warn/Saturn Overdrive unit and use that. Cheaper, easier, that's how it's been done for years, and less headache in the end.

Just bolts onto the stock transfer case.

    See http://www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com/ for more.

Novak's site has some good info on them too as I recall.

Seeing that you have 3.73 gears, what are you trying to gain with a transmission swap?

When you said AX15, I (incorrectly) assumed you needed an overdrive unit, I should've asked, my apologies.

more gears to obtain highway speeds some day without redlineing the v6 and lookin into a fully snychro tranny as well iam open to all options and sugestions just the first bright idea i had was the ax15 cuz i had a comanche pickup with the 6cyl and ax15 5spd and that trany was pretty tough and the overdrive was handy

3.73 gears aren't going to be anywhere near the redline of your V6. Those are highway cruising gears.

    You'll be fine with them.

i guess i never really thought of it like that hell my superduty has 3:73's in it...ok so if i have a readily avaliable t-18 or np435 that would be a good swap and have a granny gear incase i want to crawl up the side of a barn or something fun like that

I think terrain and road condition have much to do with perceptions of 90 mph as stupid or not.

Given a long, straight, flat, smooth road where I could see for miles in all directions and no traffic, I would not have hesitated to run the '71 up to 90 mph... and would not have thought it stupid. However, I can't visualize a place here in PA in which 90 in the CJ is not stupid (I only did it once ;) ). Limited visibility in every direction, suicidal critters darting out of the woods onto the road, too much traffic, no straight stretch more than 1/4 mile, and some of the worst roads in the nation...

BTW, the '71 with 3.73 and 33s would be nowhere near redline at 90 mph... was only turning about 2300 at 65...

Your main problem in a CJ going 90 will be if you need to make an evasive maneuver. In that case, a lot will depend on the capability of the driver, and whether they make the right choices within the capability of the vehicle. But straight ahead on a clear highway, in a CJ in proper repair, I would expect it to be ok. Certainly I've driven my intermediate Jeeps (nearly) that fast, with no trouble.

Having done the m-21 swap I'd say go for the saginaw 4 speed. The muncie requires drive shafts be lengthened and shortened. With a v6 your not going to break either one.

Probably not, but why? It won't address the OP's concern which I think have been addressed sufficiently, he has 3.73 gears.

Anything is possible but...not usually worth the effort.
With 3.73 gears you will have a good road gear and a good low with the granny 1st in a 465/t-18/435. If you still want the Warn OD you'll have to go with a Model 18 TC offset diff etc.
That low first has allot of uses beyond Crawling. The V-6-465-20/18 is a solid setup well suited to a jeep of your year.
Ive had great success with Novak stuff and they have good tech support.

    My 2c.
