Has anyone upgraded to D44 front axle?

I was interested in opinions and advice regarding a switch (upgrade) to a Dana 44 front axle. I've read through some of the posts from projects started, but none seem to have followed up on how they turned out! I opt for a 44 over a 30 or 27 because I've already got a small block installed and dont want to take any chances.

It sounds like starting with a wagoneer or scout axle requires quite a bit of fabrication and custom built axles require quite a bit of $$ and all require some steering and brake upgrades.

I'd be interested to hear how some of these projects turned out and what (if any) you'd do different.
