Does the splined end go toward the front or back?

I pulled the front drive shaft off of my 1964 CJ5 to replace the u joints, marked the front with chaulk. I finally got the old u-joints out and noticed the splined area did not slide. So I tapped and used wd-40 and tapped some more...to make a long story short. I wiped the chaulk off and can't remember which end was the front. :?

I did get the splined area to move freely. Thanks for your help!

It should be installed so water does not roll down into the splines. IE the "male" end of the slip joint should be down.
