What is it?

    The previous owner handed this to me when I picked up the Jeep. I tossed it my backpack and forgot about it until today. I looked at the serial number and VIN guide but didn't see anything that matched up.

    The bottom left is mangled, but there are numbers there if you flip it over.

    Tough to read- might be 4 89.

    Looks to me like an axle tag. The numbers 44-9 refer to the ring and pinion tooth count. 44/9 = 4.88 ratio.

    Yep, exactly what it is!
    Shoule be on the axle cover running vertical, on the left or right hand 2 bolts.

    Makes sense to me. I guess the smashed part said 4.88.

    Yes, axle tag. The 917993 number is the Jeep PN for the axle assembly; 9xxxxx is typical for the Kaiser era. Tooth count has already been explained. 44/9 is 4.888... which when rounded to three significant digits would be 4.89, which is compatible with 4.88, just like 4.09 is compatible with 4.10 which is compatible with 4.11 - close enough.
