tried to start jeep today after finishing the brakes. hooked up the battery and immediately the starter motor began hissing. turn key and nothing. the last time the jeep was started was about three months ago. i searched the forums but couldn't find anything that made sense to me. i assume it is a stock starter motor. 60 cj5

Sounds to me like it's shorting out somewhere. Check grounds, connections, and see if you can spin the starter over by jumping it direct (rig out of gear please :)

Your starter looks like the typical delco to me. It will have a Folo-Thru type bendix which will spin out and engage the flywheel when the starter spins. However, the starter should not spin just connecting the battery. The solenoid must be stuck (defective) and needs to be replaced. The starter drawing too much current can cause the contact disk in the solenoid to weld itself between the big contact studs. This I think is what happened.
