This is a typical material torsional failure. Note how the fracture is roughly 45* to the axle shaft.

You can duplicate this type of failure with a piece of chalk. Twist the chalk keeping only a twisting force applied along the axis (do not bend it). The break will be similar to the above pic.

Thanks for sharing this pic and the cause of failure. What size tires are you running?

im running 31's. with a chev 283. i reved it up and droped the clutch in reverse. i had crested the hill and the trail curved over the top and i almost went into a pond. then i heard my buddy coming up the trail so i gunned it and BANG! turns out my buddy was going up a bypass, i just thought he was coming up behind me.

Thanks guys for the offers of replacements, but i luckely have a entire built 25 w locker and stronger axles waiting to go in.

you know that reverse is the weakest gear in any manual tranny.
you're headed for the school of hard knocks, front of the class.

plus the axles arnt usto having the power applied in reverse. Like tortion bars. if you put a used set in backwards there pretty much guaranteed to snap

Yep, sort of like trying to drive on thin lake ice. I cringe a bit every time I air down the fronts and know very well what will happen if one really hits the throttle. One good reason to remove the D18 interlock so you can still have low range without removing the front driveshaft while limping home.:D

how about 350 sbc verses dana 44 rearend with lockright installed.[IMG] i did a stupid go and snatch with my jeep in the sand to try and get a buried mini truck out and sheared some teeth on one of my front dana 25 front axles, i have a power-lock in the front. i know the dana 25 carrier is a weak link so thats why installed a power-lock. but i was really abusing it that day. the rear axles were after 20 years of four wheeling, which did no damage but speed shifting on the street did a number in just a few days. oh well they were 55 years old and i had a brand new set setting on the shelf.
