rebuild underway suspension question

Hello, I'm in the rebuild process on my 68 Commando. Have it stripped down to the frame and about to sand blast it. I'm wondering about rubber bushings will the ones for older CJ's fit or is there another source? Any other general tips would also be usefull!

 

AFAIK they do...I hope so, because I have 2 boxes of them for when I start my rebuild.

Good point, which bushings are you asking about, I was guessing spring eye bushings because of the subject being about suspension

 

Sorry quess I was a little vague. I'm talking about the spring shakle bushings. I saved the body bushings and hope to reuse them, though about 25% of the captured nuts broke loose.

 

okay I watched the video, did the search found the prior threads but seems espo isn't out there any more. But sounds like the older jeep bushings will work. Looks like Jeepster Dude has most the parts i need.

 

Espo goes under Springs n' Things if Jeepdog doesn't have the bushings.

 

New question, found that one of my rear spring mounts has been destroyed and poorly rewelded in place. It doesn't seem to be aligned either. was wondering if there might be a source for a new part as repairing the old one looks tough. Looks like it was completly ripped from the frame and spot welded back, has a 4 inch bolt welded accross the top for metal filling.

 

Spring eye bushings on the front are likely the same as a CJ. But not the rear ... those you'll have to improvise.

 

I have new bushings for the rear springs but haven't been able to get the old ones out! Is there a way to remove them? I'm about try and cut them out. I'm talking about the 2.5 in. spring mount bushings at the front of the rear leaf springs. Also I have 1.75 in front springs, The bushings I see availible @ parts dude say they are for 2 in. springs. Are they availible for the 1.75 in. springs?

 

Unfortunately the rear bushing on the front spring are all by themselves, not the same as anything. I might have a couple of NOS ones, I'd have to do some digging to see what I can come up with.
As for removing the bushings from the rear there's a couple of ways. Lightly heat all around the eye which will start the rubber melting a bit then you 'should' be able to get it out with a little persuasion, if you catch my drift . Another trick is to drive a wedge like a chisel or screwdriver into the gap between the flat part of the spring and where the eye part meets it. The bushing should then come out fairly easy (see above ) Or, haul out the drill and start drilling that rubber out, not really the way I'd do it but it's a last resort and I have done that when all else failed.

Here is the link to a picture. It is the 3-piece rear frame cross member. From what you described, my guess is somebody tried to weld on the rear hanger support area. many times the area is rusted. You may not need the item I am describing but just in case here is what it is.

Hey Guys
It's been snowing so I've been working on my Jeepster rebuild. I've been searching for various parts but I'm not real sure what I have. I do know I have rebuilt the 225 v6, and can't wait to get it back on the frame. The axles seem diferent from what I've been reading about. I think the front is a 27A and the rear is a 30. The 3 spd trans is stamped T14A, I need a backup light switch. Do these numbers sound correct?

 

That sounds right. The T14 weren't a great tranny but better than on 86, at least they have 1-2 synchro's. No luck on finding any of those front bushings for you yet. Haven't been spending much time in the shop lately.

Thanks for all the info and tips! The frame part I needed was the Front rear spring hanger. I ended up cutting it off, cleaning it up and welding it back into place. Thanks for the parts link! Removing the large spring bushings took a drill and air chisel. I didn't have any luck trying to press them out. From what I can tell my transfer case is a Dana. It's stamped C18-15-24. Is thisthe same as a Spicer 18?

 

D20 was used in all the Jeepster and Commandos. An 18 would have the front and rear outputs in line offset to the passenger side

 

your right, it is a Dana 20. Seems my front drive shaft was rebuilt at some time and the front yoke is in poor shape. Most all of the parts sites I've seen list the front and rear yokes as being the same. My front yoke is smaller than the rear yoke. Front u joint is about 2 3/8" while the rear is about 3 1/2". trying to find a new yoke for transfer case, finding parts for the Jeepster is tuff!

 

I've got the opposite problem, I have 2 parts Jeepsters and no good one R)
