I have antifreeze leaking on top of the head through a bolt hole that mounts the head to the engine block. The bolt is under the valve cover. Do I need to start looking for new heads or is this a head gasket leak? I also noticed that I have some oil in my antifreeze. Any suggestions, opinions, or options would be greatly appreciated.

In either case it looks like the head is going to have to come off. Any suggestions as to things that need to be done while the head is off?

    The engine is a 1970 v6 Dauntless 225.

not sure on your engine but a lot of engines need a sealer put on there head bolts to keep water from leaking.

Don't know where your located, but what are the chances the block froze and busted? Nothing tricky on V6 head bolts leaking. They are installed with a sealer tho. Oil in the water is not a good sign. You are probably getting it the other way also. A pathway is a pathway. Compression good? Plugs look good?

Go down to your favorite auto shop and ask them to place the exhaust probe from the engine analyzer in the radiator and look for hydrocarbons. Since the coolant is a sealed system there shouldn't be any burnt fuel residue in your coolant.

There are several products out there that fix head gaskets just like radiators, power steering systems, and transmissions. It's kinda pricy, but if the leak isn't too big it's a good gamble.
