Is there such a thing on a '72 CJ5? I have a chrome thingamajiggy on my dash that looks like a button. The backside, as best as I can tell, looks like the backside of a cigarette lighter.

    Thoughts?

How about some pictures of that thingamajiggy?
I have a similar chrome thingy on my '71 model, however I have a cigarette lighter, also.

I believe that it's the cigar lighter that your looking at. The chrome button is depressed to engage the lighter and it's removed by pulling the base by the two funny looking finger grips.

Yup, that's it. Used a knife to pry it out.

That's not a factory plug. The factory used plain domed plugs, either plated or painted.

The cigarette lighter and ashtray was optional. No need to delete it - just don't order it.

It's not a plug, it's a cigar lighter. My 72 Commando had the same style, small chrome button you push to heat the lighter and then you pull it out with the two small finger grips on the sides. My 74 CJ5 has a different style lighter, the familiar later style that almost every vehicle has, with the rubber knob that sticks out (and is much easier to pull out). So I can't say whether this is stock for a 72 CJ5 or whether it was added from a different Jeep vehicle (I suspect the Commando and Full-Size Jeeps used the same type of lighter).
