I have the same situation. The VIN shows 1971, but it has a 232 which if my research is correct, tells me it's a 1972. True?

Re: What year would you refer to it as?

well it depends, it could be a swap in. Without information on the rest of the equipment on the jeep, it would be hard to tell, but YES the 232 inline was not available on the 71 model year.

Back to the OP's question: definitely call it a 61 since that is the model year.

If the VIN starts in J2, then it's a '72 VIN.

Almost all manufacturers start building any given model year vehicle about mid-summer of the previous year.
For example, this summer starting in July most manufacturers will start building the 2011 model year cars, and they will start selling 2011s in Sept 2010.

    Common practice.

Hey SHANK, I'm sure there was no slight intended. Hang around and I think you'll find the forum very accommodating.

It's true that the model year starts in September. The manufacturers are winding down the year's production by mid-summer, and tooling up for the next model year. Back in the 60s and 70s everybody knew when the new cars came out - the new models were announced to great fanfare and a barrage of advertising. If you didn't live through that era, you might not realize what the model year timing was.
