So I just picked up my great grandfathers 1964 CJ-5 this afternoon for $250. A guy bought a PTO winch off my great uncle and I took the winch off the jeep earlier today. As we looked into the transfer case we saw anti-freeze in the bottom of it.
I cant think of any way there is anti freeze all the way back there unless someone purposely put it in there...........

    any ideas?

Just wondering.. how did you ID that it was antifreeze ? No idea how it got there by accident. No idea how it'd be helpful to be in the transfercase.

Sound like I get to meet your uncle today. Hope the winch is good. Are you sure it is antifreeze in the transfer case or just water mixed with gear oil? Thank you for taking the rest of the jeep, I really didnt want to deal with the whole thing.

It was as green as could be, unless my great grandfather used some lime green oil, lol. Yeah same here, thats why I figured I would check on here.

WOW!!!! What a coincidence!!! Thats pretty sweeet. Yeah My great grandfather had a bunch of jeeps. I have another jeep of his, 1963 here at my house I am restoring now (it also has a PTO winch). When we found out he sold that other 1964 with the pto for that price we couldnt believe it knowing the value of the winch and the jeeps condition. Then he said something about you not wanting the jeep and I figured well if thats the case I will take it off his hands and have two identical jeeps to restore.
Yeah the winch is good. there is a little bit of cable out but that was out when the winch was on the jeep and we didnt start it up so we never got it back in. it all looks like its in good shape to me. You definitely got a great deal on that.
Well thats what I was hoping it was, but it didnt look milky at all, it looked lime green. Knowing my great grandfather he put it in there for some reason. He was a jeep mechanic that trained the other mechanics going over seas in WWII and he was really smart and did a lot of things many wouldn't think of.

only thought i have is he put it there on purpose, maybe to keep moisture that got in there from freezing in the winter, antifreeze does have some rust inhibitors in it as well

What pto is one the other jeep? is it the same as was on the 64 or does it look different. I am talking about the part on the transfer case. The winch does seem to be in great shape. I am going to clean it up a little today and get the rest of the extra metal off it.

Taken the winch apart and I found some big problems. It lost it bearings and sent them into the gears. O will hopefully I can fix it.

I went to check again today and it seems that the anti-freeze isnt there.....? Either the oil was a very lime green and moving the jeep changed it back to the oil color or there was a bit of anti-freeze on top and then mixed in. oh well, I dont know, I am going to drain it anyways.

this other jeep has the same exact looking pto part. looks identical. the only difference is that the winch I have on this one is bigger and looks a little different, but other than that it looks the same.

Yeah I couldnt tell you the last time that winch was ever used. Ive run this 63 jeep at my camp for a while and the winch has been used a little each year and haven't had any problems with it except the drive chain last year but I replaced it and hasnt bothered since. So the bearings were gone or the just came apart into the gears? two things, a small magnet you can stick into the bottom, and or fill it with kerosene or diesel fuel and vacuum it out. That is a great way to clean gears and such up.

I have it apart now. The gears have very little damage and still can be used. Now I just need to find new bearings for it. I will have to make my own gaskets, and I will have to find a seal as well.

Yeah thats good. Thats a Ramsey winch so I dont know if you could go on their website and order parts for that or not. The only part I got was a chain master link and it was just a standard chain (i dont remember the size) and I got a chain link through a hardware store.
