Roger the scary shackles. They will be the first thing to go after I get it running. The 35" tires are shot anyway and I want to lower it and go with 31" tires.

I agree with all the wiring comments. I'll have to take a photo of the wiring under dash... but I suspect you have seen garbage like it before. There is a spot where wiring is poked thru rust holes to make it to a point. I want to get it running and then I'll start on the wiring. The EZ wiring sounds good though I might check Painless too.

Last week I tried to charge the battery that was in it because it was only 6 years old. It took the charge and did ok on a quick load check but failed after turning over the engine just once. I bought a new battery and installed it and cranked on the engine unsuccessful in starting it. I ran out of time. After a few days I went back to try it again and the battery was dead.

A battery disconnect is next install. While just cleaning on the tub I came across 12 pieces of wire that were disconnected. There were two major branches of the original harness that were unterminated. There are splices everywhere. I looked into painless wiring briefly this afternoon but I will look closely at EZ. Is there any point in trying to save any of the original harness?

I tried to check the oil level because there is a brand new oil filter and the previous owner said he had just changed the oil. I finally found a coat hanger that was being used as a dip stick. Any inexpensive suggestions for that?

    Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with saving any of the old wire...if you get the one from EZ you will have everything you need + some...I save the extra and tied it up under the dash for other uses (radio, extra lights), when I did my 67 I pull everything out old...it's broken in to 3 sections...front, back, and interior/dash. I'm sure the painless is the same way, I just know that one is about 2x the price...I had a great experience with EZ. Good luck!!

It isn't as bad as it looks...I'm no electrican and I completed this all by myself.

It is way more fun to go buy spools of wire and do it yourself. The mechanics manual has the wire diagram in it so you can be sure.

That's what I did anyway. I got my headlights and tail lights to work, today I plan on doing more of it.

Those are all good ideas. I like the inexpensive suggestions. I am most comfortable with the electrical side of the project anyway but I don't have alot of spare time. I may look to split the difference between easy to install and least expensive. I think the fuse block will also be an important factor. I'm thinking >8 circuits and well sealed against the water and mud.

I have to order the manuals also... geeze.
