I have a 1970 CJ5 with a Dauntless V6. I was wondering which grade of gas you guys use in yours.

Personally I run unleaded, the cheap stuff. I tried the hi octane a while back when the 225 went to runnin' kinda' funny. Turns out I put a timing light on it to find that my timing had slipped a little. Reset the timing and went back to the cheap stuff. Runnin' good again.

I use as cheap of gas as I can find. Even thought of watering it down with water with these near $2.00 per gallon. But so far I have not been that desperate.

I been pourin' in the mid-grade. Not sure I gain anything. I also drop a little of that lead substitute. Not sure that helps much....

    Thanks!
I wasn't sure so I've been buying the highest octane. But HOLY GOD! It just keeps going up! Its sad when it costs over $20.00 for 10 gallons!
I have a 1972 Cutlass that DOES NOT run well on the cheaper stuff. I thought my Jeep may be the same way.

Run the cheapest stuff you can without detonation (that nasty pinging noise under hard acceleration). If it detonates with 87 octane, move up to 89. You're just wasting your money by running a higher octane than it really needs. It should run fine on 87 unless you've done something to the engine performance wise...

Great point here. It's a good idea to toss a container of lead substitute in there (V6) every few tanks or so. Gas back in '70 was leaded, and prolonged lack of lead may eventually affect the valves adversely, unless the valve seats have been hardened. Hopefully someone else can chime in with particulars.

I usually run the mid grade stuff. 87 octane makes my V6 ping pretty bad.

I am not sure if this will help or not as I run a 350, but while racing I run half cam2 (114) and half super (93) with lead substitute every other tank. When not racing, I run straight super. It just does a better job keeping the engine clean. Now this is just a personal preference. If your jeep runs good on 87, run it. I run 87 in my truck and it doesn't bother me a bit. hth :)

I run 87, no problems. With the Super Hurricane in the PU, I bet I could mix with obout 25% kerosene and still run. :D

87 octane here too. With prices the way they are, I don't even want to put that in it.:(
