I am looking at a 1972 with a 304, auto, pwr steering and brakes and factory air. Will the front clip off an early Commando fit on the later Commando?

It can be done, has been done.

Heres why it wont bolt on.

The early jeepster like the Cj 5 is shorter in the nose.

So yours is the newer AMC jeep and they lengthened them to allow room for the AMC motors.

So you would need to lenghten the hood and fenders from an early jeepster.
I know that some have used 2 hoods and sectioned them together.
You could also use a AMC CJ hood but it would look like a CJ in front...

So will a 72 and later CJ5 front clip work without a lot of modification?

The front clip of the '72 should fit, but you will loose the square hood of the Commando and use the tapered hood from the CJ-5.

You need the CJ-5 fenders, grill and hood.

You may need to trim the inner fender wells which is minor. Hood hinges need to be addressed too but again very minor.
