how to check the starter bushing(bellhousing)

    any way to see if it needs relacing..other than turning it..is it that simple..my starter was indeed busted..(drive was broken)..figured i'd check the bushing also while its being rebuilt..the mechanics manual doesnt even mention it

    If you have the armature out of the starter you can stick it in the bushing and wiggle it around. It should have the same amount of play in all directions. If the bushing is worn, it will have more play in the direction perpendicular to the ring gear. If you don't have the armature out, you can use a similarly sized shaft to get an idea...
