does anyone know of what I should use to make sure I cleaned out the gas tank? after I poured out the gas, at the bottom there was a brown colored gas I am guessing its prob rust but am not sure, the ourside of the tank is in great shape, I figure its a "over the years" thing.

I have heard there is some stuff I can get to pour in and clean and seal the inside, or am I better off just pouring a 1/2 gallon of gas in it and flushing it out??

you can go to a radiator shop and have the gas tank "tanked", which will completely clean it out. but if there's any holes from rust, those will need to get patched, which the shop can do to, they use a coating, dunno what its called. dad did this to jeep when he first got it. don't suppose ur flushing the gas lines are you? i got a lil help from another site

actually it had a plastic fuel line, I am replacing that with new metal fuel line.

I dunno if the local radiator shops will do that but I will call.

depending on how much it costs to get it tanked, you might consider just replacing it. Thats what I did when mine sprang a pinhole leak. After 30 years, I figured it couldn't hurt. They're around $100 for a steel replacement.

My '73 sprung a rust hole in the tank after 2 years, and this was in dry, sunny CA. Check the price of replacements, but you can repair the tank with JB Weld or such if it has any holes. The body man where I used to work used bondo to repair gas tanks. POR-15 sells a fuel tank sealer http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=163 . I've also read about using metal etchant to clean the inside of the tank, then coating the interior with Pliobond cement.
