I have a 64 CJ5A with your standard F-Head engine which I just bought about a month ago. When I bought it ran fine, but when I got it home it would not stay "lit". Tried working on it this last weekend and got it going from time to time for about 30+/- seconds before it would die. It seemed that we could keep it going a while longer if we put our hand partially over the carb. I have drained all the fuel and replace in case that is the issue. Seems that it has a new carb (maybe Solex) and new fuel pump. It has two "advance" cables with one opening the valve which is not connected and the other that does not seem to do anything. Any guidance would be appreciated.

one cable goes to the fuel enrichment valve, the other goes to the accelerator arm on the carb to idle the engine up, thinking the fuel enrichment valve pulled tword the rear of the engine is choke, try that, it sounds if it is running lean, the solex is a finiky carb when cold

This really sounds like a basic fuel delivery issue. If you're able to start it with your hand over the carb, then the engine is starving for fuel. Have you tried removing the fuel line and cranking the engine over to make sure fuel is being delivered to the carb?(into a catch can, of course). It could be as simple as a fuel filter, or possibly a faulty fuel pump.

ive seen this on two other carbs like this, they seem to run lean but fine with the enrichment/choke out. almost like a vacuum leak somewhere.
