Dual exhaust with 231 manifolds

    Has anyone done a dual exhaust with some 231 manifolds?

    In the thread you posted in the OP asked about headers, not 231 manifolds. Two different things, so it warrants it's own thread.

    I played around w/ this idea during the rebuild when the tub was off. The problem comes in where to put the 2nd muffler. There's just not a lot of extra room, especially if you're trying to keep the exhaust up out of the way. A possibility is in running a single dual inlet/outlet muffler on the driver's side. You'll have to cross over and back or run the tailpipes together out the driver's side. It certainly can be done but with a good high flow muffler single exhaust does fine. The Dauntless sounds real good w/ a single exhaust.:v6:

    What size pipes would be good to use for a 2 into 1 system? When I got my jeep it had a single exhaust that exited out the rear passenger side. It had a cherry bomb muffler and sounded pretty nice, I think that's the way I'm going to do it. Should I get both manifolds off a 231 or just the drivers side, I don't know if they need to match or have different sized outlets.

    I *think* the 231 manifolds are both passenger side manifolds, with one side exiting from the front and the other exiting from the rear...

    No, that's how my stock 225 manifolds are because the jeep has ross steering stock. Both the 231 manifolds in a car application exited from the rear.

    Not exactly what you are looking for but here is what I did on my 231.

    Since I use this mainly as a trail rig I was not too concerned with any performace loss. With that being said I really have not noticed any difference on trails, around town or on the freeway. I still have great low end grunt and can cruise the freeway at 65mph no problem. It took some time to get used to not hearing the exhaust anymore!

    I have two 2" pipes into 1 muffler with a 2.5" outlet. I have nothing to compare it to, but I have no complaints with this set up.

    I'd just get a driver's side manifold. Try to get a "flat" one. I show you a pic. It gives you maximum room for steering gear.

    You run 2" pipes off the manifolds, Y into the muffler and what ever you want for tailpipe.

    I'd suggest going w/ a high flow diversion plate muffler. You can't do parks w/ a cherry bomb because they have no spark arresting capability.:v6:

    Thank a lot for the picture, next time I'm at the junkyard I'll try to find a 231 with the flat driver's side manifold. Your jeep looks really clean underneath.

    I have Headman Headers on mine with glass packs with no other pipe. Going to change that a little. I'm going to add 2 into 1 with a decent muffler.
