Epoxy primer questions

I'm looking at paint for my 5 and the paint shop says I need to apply epoxy primer then high build primer followed by a sealer primer. Do I need to do all these steps or can I get away with just the epoxy primer?

How much primer and paint do I need?

Is single stage the way to go? The paint shop wants me to do a bc/cc.

Can the epoxy primer be sanded like the high build?

I used Eastwood paint. I believe the epoxy primer can be sanded like high build but the high build has a much faster drying time than the epoxy. I believe the Eastwood site said you can sand the high build after 1-2 days where you need several days for the epoxy. I used a single stage and had prety good results without a paint booth. I used 2 coats of high build,sanded both coats, one epoxy as a primer/sealer and 2 coats of urethane top coat.
Etching primer is used on bare metal.

 

The epoxy primer is a good primer, but there is no thickness to it compared to high built.
In real life situation it would mean that you burn through before you get the smooth finish as you need under the topcoat.
I've had best results using urethane primer under urethane topcoats. I've used Awlgrip 545 primer, than Awlgrip high built (both these are epoxy and known for boat applications) , than I used Slicksand as primer/sealer under the topcoat.

 

dupont makes nice primers...look for nason brand sameish stuff less money...2 part urethane filling primer is the way to go

 

I've used SPI Epoxy primer a few times and am about to order more for my 68 Camaro and 62 CJ5. As far as epoxy goes, it's great and the price it right. They have a "Perfect Paint Job" article on the site. You can spray on a few coats and sand/paint if your car is real straight. Some Corvette restorers do this since the Epoxy won't crack on the fiberglass as easy as a 2k. For my projects, it's Epoxy, body work, 2K, Epoxy seal coat, paint. SPI can sell you the Epoxy, 2K, and the clear. They used to sell the BC/CC paint, but got out of it and now focus on the primers and clears. They have a great forum as well with lots of knowledge - even on other brands - it's not all for SPI.
