i have 2 steering columns. the tube on 1 measures 28 inches. The tube on the other measures 32 inches. Add the 2" riser for the Grant wheel and longer column sits in my chest. the 28" came with my 74 cj5 with stock low back seats. The longer column came off a 74 with 76+ seats. Other than the length, they are identical. What gives? Next question. The inner shaft on both columns pull out about an inch. Is there a spacer that goes on the top of the outer tube? Do i need to remove the inner shaft or press it further in? Is it common for this to happen, or do i have some work to do? Help a newbie out. thanks. :flag:

On my 74 there is a spring at the bottom of the shaft that holds the shaft down, but you can pull up on the wheel and compress the spring. So it could move if the spring is missing.

I've got a 75 intermediate, and I've just rebuild my column.
I've only got a plastic or poly bush at the bottom, and the spring with bearing on top.I dont know if this is correct, or if I'm missing some parts.....very possible.

The tube of my steering column is measuring at 81cm or 810mm. Sorry, but dont know in inches.
    Hope it helps a bit!

2.54 cm per inch so 81 cm is 31.89 inch
