I've got a 68 CJ5 and am trying to wire my ammeter gauge correctly. There are several ways I have read to wire it and I want to make sure that I do it correctly to not damage anything.

I currently have my positive battery cable tied into my starter solonoid, and have a wire from my keyed ignition switch to another post on the starter solonoid. There is a bare post on the solonoid marked "R" that I don't plan to have anything connecting to it.

My plan for my ammeter gauge is to
    (1) connect the positive post of the gauge to the BAT terminal on the alternator.
    (2) connect the other post of the gauge to the starter solonoid post that has the wire going to my keyed ignition switch.

I will use a #10 wire for each connection. Please let me know if this is correct wiring.

The "R" pole on the starter is to feed 12V to the coil while cranking. If you no longer run or need a ballast resistor, you don't need this.

The ammeter should be in line with the wire from the alternator to inside the Jeep that all accessories run off of. In other words, everything except the starter motor should run through the meter...I personally don't like ammeters; a volt meter will tell you everything you need to know, unless you're running two batteries with an isolator...
