I think the transmission in my 58 is out of a 71 CJ5. It makes noise going into 2nd gear. I imagine it will need a rebuild if not replacement soon. Do I have any options or do I have to go back to the factory trans? Is there a 4 speed that will fit?

I have 2 t-14s but shipping would be more then the Jeep is worth. Try a search, 4 speeds have been totally flogged hear over the years.

I prefer the 3 speed anyway. Will a t-14 work from any model jeep? A friend has a few flat fender parts trucks.

I would think you could find a T90 fairly easily and cheap. I think that's what your 58 should have used.

Rebuilding a T90 is easy and you can do it yourself on the kitchen counter. The only special tools you need are a brass hammar and 1/2 inch brass drift. Arbors for the cluster gear bearings can be made from dowels and conduit for about $5. The cost of parts is usually reasonable if most of your tranny is in good shape. Bearings are all available new and if you need a gear they are also available. You can still find NOS military surplus gears and synchro rings so you don't have to purchase offshore stuff.
There are a couple of step by step tutorials on the web. PM me if you cant find them.
