ehh... that's what my old l-head looked like when we tore it down. it was still running just fine looking like that, as good as a 50 year old engine that had never been rebuilt could run... but running well none-the-less.

That's about what mine looked like IIRC. I put a new head gasket in and put it all back together. Does everything have to look spotless when you put it back together?

I say clean it up, get the carbon off.

see whats under that. If its pitted, you can get new valves.

First thing clean it up some, and it might look better than you think.

Hard to tell in the pic, but do the valves look chipped or anything??

L-head valves, and the piston at the top. hurricane only has one valve in block per cylinder. ;)

Why do you have the head off?

If it was a leaky head gasket, I'd clean up the oil and carbon and put it back together.

Unless there's an obvious chunk missing out of one of the vavles (usually an exhaust valve), it's hard to judge how well the valves seal by inspection. You'd need a shop's help to grind the valves, and the engine would have to come out. Not something you want to do until it's needed.

No. Cleaner is better though. The gasket surface needs to be clean.

If you scrape or wire brush the carbon, keep the scrapings out of the cylinders. Stuff a rag down in the cylinder, and wipe up any scrapings.

It was smokin bad!!!! Anyone think it could be sticky valves based on the picture? I will most likely pull the motor and have it checked out but I really only use it to plow. I want to eventually do it up soup to nuts but I was hoping I could give it a little more life and have a lot less smoke..Dave

On a flathead the oil rings would be the main reason it was smoking.
