Well starting to put drive line together. It looks a lot better then it did. Have a question. How important is it to change the pilot bearing?

pilot bearing.....when I pulled mine on the Ford 5.0 I filled up the hole with axle grease and drove a wooden dowl (tight fit) into the hole, popped it right out.....YMMV

I used the grease and the dowel and was able to pop the pilot bearing out and placed the new one. After that the clutch and pressure plate went on easy then the bell housing. Probably have to wait to next weekend to set the transmission and transfer case.[IMG][/IMG] Picture shows clutch

Why is it you never get as much done as you plan on the weekend. Oh well It's starting to look like an engine.

I have a couple of questions? Which way does the transmission mount face? forward or backward. Anyone have pictures?
Also how about pictures of the clutch fork? is there supposed to be a return spring. Thanks:D

Did you check the new pilot bearing on the end of the tranny before you installed it in the crank. It's cheap insurance against having a really lousy day trying to get that tranny in the last 1/2". Don't ask me how I know. :)

It's just one of those things I learned the hard way about. Like making absolutely sure the clutch disc is in facing the right direction..............I'm sure there are a bunch of 'em.

    Yep, I'm one of them!
I had a new bushing turned, and didn't make sure it fits properly.
I had to take out the engine again!

    School fees!

Even if the pilot bushing fits well on the bench, sometimes the edge gets upset during installation. You can check with a spare input shaft or even better a correct size hone. An oversize drill bit can also chamfer the end to make a smoother transistion.

Finally have something to post again. Rebuilt carburetor, Put body on frame. Have some great looking wheels that hold air. Slowly getting wiring done. Have a long way to go but it is starting to look like a jeep. Getting close to fire engine. Plan on headers. Still have to mount steering box and figure out the rest of the steering.
