Back to my '49 truck with a flat head four. Is the starter compatable with other jeep models and years? thanks.

No, unfortunately it is not. Your '49 most likely has the same starter as the early '2A, with the solenoid mounted on the fender. This is one of the most expensive and hard-to find starters. They are available, but you'll have to look for it and pay the price.

What some folks have done is change out the bellhousing and flywheel for the ones from an F-head engine, and this allows you to run either the F-head starter (cheaper and easier to find) or else a Toyota starter from an FJ. I would try a search here in the forums, it has been discussed many times.

I'm not sure about the solenoid, the fenders are gone, but it has the mechanical foot button with linkage mounted to the bell housing going to the starter. thanks

Ok, then that is the same starter as the '3A used. This is also an expensive and sometimes hard-to-find starter.

Would either a '2A or '3A work if I could find one?

It should, check the number of teeth on your ring gear to be sure. If you use the '2A starter you will need to add a solenoid and a push-button starter switch.

its the same amount of work to switch to a 2a starter from a 3a as it is to go to toy starter from 3a. Everything related has to be swapped.

Hmmmm, thats very interesting. My 3A came through with a solenoid mounted on the starter and a turn-key ignition. There was no evidence of a fender mounted solenoid or foot pedal.

On that same token, a junk 53 3B I have has a push button.

I don't know much about it but our local rebuild shop, who has done wonders in the past, can't get parts for it. It's kind of a dissapointment, they've rebuilt every starter, generator, etc I've owned.

Since I don't have 3 feet, I'd much rather have something with a solenoid somewhere and turn key ign.

You need the toy starter. I could start the motor with my right hand while I fiddle with the carb with my left easily. I could drive across the yard with starter. No problems. If there was a problem then plop on the autozone counter and get another.

I'm missing something here, what's a "toy starter". Also I'd think I'd get the "deer in the headlights" if I mention a '49 Willys at an Autozone.

So to make a toy starter work I would need a flywheel and bellhousing from an F head. More surgery than I was hoping for.
