okay so i got the bottom of my jeep finally done....and now im working on the inside of the tub. i plan on wirebrushing the hell out of the inside. getting it pretty much to bare metal.

now the question is should i prime it before herculining it??

also is herculiner a good brand or should i maybe go to pepboys and see what they have...??

    suggestions?? comments??

    thanks, Matt

If you decide to go this route, don't prime it first. The Herculiner instructions tell you that any paint needs to be fully cured before putting Herc on top. Be absolutely sure that all rust is gone.

Follow the directions carefully...go overboard on the cleaning directions.

I just did the back of my 96 F150 with Herc and it turned out great.

This is a popular option for many Jeep owners...however, there are also lots of threads about how to remove this stuff, and it isn't pretty.

Mike, you are the one I was thinking of when posting my response...and the reason why I won't do the inside of mine the same way.

Having said that...Herc does have it's place, and seems to work pretty well, as long as the prep work is meticulous.

I herculined mine. Reduced outside noise quite a bit. If I had to do it again, I think I would buy the Duplicolor stuff in a can and spray it on. Looks like it's a bit smoother than Herculiner. I like mine though. Non slip.

I used Herc inside of a truckbed "ONE" time in my life and will never use that stuff again. Application is simple but the product is very rough and mine oxidized poorly and seemed to thin out over time. Also it takes twice as much product as it says to get a good thick coat.

If you do all that work on getting it clean and sanded I would shoot paint as well. Heck paint is cheaper and easy to repair.

If you want smooth Get the durabak smooth with UV protetctant. It does not come with the rubber granuals like their normal liner and Herculiner does.

You can also use any no slip Marine Coating and most of that is UV resistant as well.

Ultra Tuff marine coatings has a pretty good selection of colors also. Both Durabak and Ultra tuff are Roll on.

alright so say i was not going to herculine it...??

i dont have a paint gun or anything...so i would just rattle can it...and im almost certain the spray paint wouldn't hold up very well....

    what would be another option???

    thanks, Matt

I used a $100 HVLP gun. Had the air compressor though. It came out pretty well and I'm a total rookie.

I agree, the Duplicolor stuff is a rubberized paint. Somewhat different and way easier to remove if you need to. Spray can is smooth, I did the undercoating of the tub w/ it. Roll on w/ their roller gives texture, but no big lumps, I did the inside w/ this. Three years down and it has held up amazingly well. Figured I'd have to touch up a lot but haven't at all. It's very tough. I covered out to the top mounting lip and painted up to that. It looks cool and no wear from guys standing on the edge to get in or out. See the last two pics here for a visual. http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70652

I just did mine in duplicolor spray(blue can) and love it.Please dont do it with cheap bedliner roll on stuff.I bought my jeep and spent 2 weeks getting that rough crap out ot it.It looks terrible and feels terrible. Here are some pictures of mine.

I did prime it before i sprayed the bedliner on but that we just because i didnt know how long it would be untill i finished it.Either way will work and the good thing about this spray is that u cant really mess it up.Just tape off what you dont want it on.I took my dash out and did it to.

My site has some more pictures of it on it.I love the stuff, kinda pricey(i would say 5-6 cans to do good coat) but worth it in my opinion.

I went with the herc, was looking for a little bit less tin can sounding and figured the paint would not be durable enough for me . it's holding up well and was great the 2-3rd day when it was still sticky but after that it got hard and I think it's kind of slippery, now my rig gets dirt inside the tub from messing around in ditches wheel'n ,,,and that dirt is crazy hard to get out of all those nooks and crannys ,,,,,I would not do it again ,,,
if you wheel it I would say no ,but it might be great for a crusier/driver,though.

A lot of people over on Pirate and Jeepforum rave about the U-Pol Raptor. Comes with a gun. I was thinking about using that for mine.

    http://www.tptools.com/p/2600,186_U-Pol-Raptor-Truck-Bed-Liner-Kit.html

U-Pol Raptor Truck Bed Liner Kit

    Simply Fill, Shake and Shoot!

Raptor Bed Liner Kit is a 2-component urethane system designed for applying directly to your truck bed. Bed liner dries rapidly and protects against rust, corrosion, UV damage, and extreme temperatures while resisting stains and abrasion. Waterproof material stays flexible and helps to reduce road noise and vibration.

Kit includes 4 bottles of bed liner base, 1 liter of hardener, and application gun (requires 8 cfm @ 50-60 psi).

Easy to apply - simply fill each bottle of base (each is 3/4 full) with hardener, shake bottle, and spray on with applicator gun. Bed surface should be scuffed and free from dirt for proper adhesion. Kit covers up to standard 8' truck bed. 125 sq ft per kit.

Available in Black or Clear (Tint with urethane base).

Individual bottles of bed liner base also available.

o and also...... what do you all think i should use to fill up some drill holes/rust holes and imperfections in my body?? i was thinking bondo but i dont want it to crack and f up on me later on.... so i was thinking jb weld...or some sort of liquid metal.... i have some jb laying around and i would think if i grinded/sanded the area and put a little jb weld in the hole... and let it dry, sand it down....than it would be good to go for the paint/bed liner... cause i have quite a few rust/drill holes and all sorts of imperfections.....

If you cant weld or braze, and clean out the rust 100% it may be a good option on small holes, such as from sheetmetal screws, etc. I wouldnt go this route with holes larger that 3/16 inch,,if that.

If you have a welder, then clamp sone copper plate to the underside and weld the hole up,, weld wont penetrate the copper so it acts as a backing plate of sorts.

I am also considering what kind of coating for the interior of my Jeep,, paint isnt holding up well at all, especially in the cargo area.
