    Started out with a 65 CJ-5A. Came with 350, NP435, D18, and a Warn OD.
Drove it onto the trailer to get it home.

It's getting a 4.3/700r4/D300 treatment so I have some extra parts

    and along comes a 48 CJ-2A

    Sorry about the blurry picture.

Well I decided to put the D18 and OD into the 48, well this is what I found:

Yes, the COMPLETE OD came out as one unit.

A look inside and it all seems to be there.

But a look at the trans output shaft, a little different story.

Yes, once you realize what you are looking at, the treads are cut/ground off.

Now the question, is this an old school trick for easy install? Never seen this and it kind of shocked me to find. Not a modification I would make and not sure if the extra stresses will "push" the OD out the back but this one seems to be in good shape.

Nope, just someone who did not understand why that retainer nut was supposed to be there. It is almost certainly why the bull gear teeth are stripped as it allowed for too much end play and there was nothing to counter the force created by the helical cut gears (as you surmised). Now you need a new trans mainshaft along with the OD bull gear. Ouch!

I've never seen that and I currently have 5 ODs at home and worked with many. Looking in the Bowel gear something does not look right. Is the female square head nut still inside, or did the threaded porton of the output shaft snap off leaving it in the nut?

Threads and nut are still there, threads even look good.
Guess it's a good thing I wasn't planning on using this trans, think it's only a 4:1 first gear.
The only "damage" i can see is that little tube (not sure what it does but straight down the center) looks like it's been hit against a flat surface.

This is what I thought had happened at first but nope, the shaft is cut off, not broken. Only thing I found missing was the "square" snap ring on the back side of the Torx nut.
