if a starters bendix teeth get stripped would it possibly wear the teeth down on the flywheel in one spot?
the reason i ask is my old starters teeth were trashed and now that i have installed a new one.
sometimes it makes that terrible noise starting as well.
and i am wondering if that is because it stopped on the worn part of the flywheel.
    any thoughts?

Maybe. Take the starter off and turn the engine by hand over to inspect the teeth on the flywheel. Becasue of the compression stroke, the engine will always stop in only one of two (on a 4-banger? I think so) places. I recall you can either flip the ring gear over or rotate it on the flywheel to get rid of the dead spot, or maybe replace the ring gear. This would be something I'd ask a shop to do...

With a genuine "Bendix" gear that throws the starter gear into the flywheel on starting, I think it's more likely that the starter just isn't engaging before the starter motor starts turning. Or maybe there's a burr on the flywheel that keeps it from meshing. This is the Toyota starter, or the original?
