Buick v6 identification

    How do I tell if a Buick v6 is odd fire or even fire, other than pulling the pan and looking at the crank??

    Any code numbers in the block to look for??

    Have you figured out your engine code yet? I'm finding out that it may take alot of degreaser and sanding. Mine seems to be missing some numbers. Isn't owning a jeep fun? It's like opening a time capsule and a scavenger hunt all in one. So far my CJ appears to be a 1962,68,73.

    Sparky, thanks for the link.

    I am going to be looking at a couple of engines for sale this weekend, and it is going to make my efforts a lot easier to have this list along.

    Next question for all of you --------

    What is a good aftermarket fuel injection system for one of these Buick 231 engines????

    I am fine with a TBI, I figure it should be a lot cheaper than a port system.

    Please help! I'm a newbee and I recently purchased my first Jeep, a '66 cj5. Many previous owners but the rumor was an original 225 dauntless. I started digging and found signs that wasn't true like no "A" in the serial number and a 1bbl carb. I've searched high and low and here is what I know: Block casting # between the intake and the firewall shows 1254083 which may be a 1978 231? Under the right valve cover, I found a 1876848 d which I can't find anywhere. I also need to know if it's and odd or even fire which in the 231 may have changed mid-year in 1978? My distributer cap has 6 risers which appear to be evenly spaced.
    Any help with this ID would be greatly appreciated. Standby for pictures.

    Look for a stamp/impression, not a casting/raised number for an engine code on a V6 225 Dauntless. It is not under the valve cover, but rather on top of the right bank of the crankcase--just below the rocker arm cover, between exhaust manifold ports. It is on the machined surface on the block.

    Does it have a round smog port in the rear of the manifold that goes into the Valley? The 125 starting block number is a known 231 block number...........Buick stayed with the Odd Fire until "About" mid 1977............so it could be an Odd Fire but it is clearly not a 225 dauntless odd fire.

    Take a picture of the lobes on the distributors shaft at the points and post it..........The cap will always have 6 positions.

    1254083 shows to be a 1978 231 even fire turbo charged block

    Thanks to those who responded. A '78 231 seems to be the best answer but I see that the odd/even switched mid-year in '78. (To make it harder, It came with a 1bbl Rochester on top) I think the even fire is correct also because somewhere I read that the odd's distributer will have 8 risers but 2 of which are capped to make the odd fire. My distributer appears to be six evenly spaced risers.
    Sorry for my cluelessness - Prior to buying this Jeep, I had never heard of a Dauntless or an Odd Fire!

    The cap won't tell you. That cap looks exactly like a 225 odd-fire cap.

    Okay, so if half of the lobes on the distributor shaft are elongated, then I have an odd, right?
    I'll look first thing in the morning.
