I have a 63 CJ5 with a 225 swapped in it. The engine runs great, but I have no cooling fan. What's worse is that I only have 2.5" of clearance between the water pump pulley and the radiator. Has anyone encountered this problem before?
As I see it I have 3 options:
-Get an electric fan and mount it on the outer side of the radiator.
-Get a small electric fan and mount it on the inside (I've looked online, the only one that would fit is a 10" - is that big enough?)
-Cut the radiator/grill shroud so I can move the radiator forward a bit and then mount a regular fan
If anyone has any ideas, or knows if one of my options is the best way to go, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I have a 57 cj5 with a 283. I have a 3 core radiator (new) for a 60s camaro. I wound up removing the water pump pully and using an electric fan (flex a lite black magic 188) between the radiator and water pump. Tight but fits with enough clearance. I can try and get some pics if interested..

I'd love to see a few pics if it's not too much trouble. I'm curious to see what v-belt I can use, since right now I only have the crank, water pump, and alternator...
    Was that 3 core expensive?

wow that double fan set-up is nice! It looks like there's not much room up there, but it fits very well. Mt radiator is not as wide, I'll definatley look to see if a double fan can fit...

I used an XJ fan in the front. Mounted the same direction as it would be on an XJ so it pushes air. So far it has worked, but I have not pushed the Jeep too much or run it in real hot temperatures.

You should be able to install any kind of fan you want with the 225 unless it was mounted forward farther than is usually done. Personally, I didn't have too good of luck using electrics and went back to a mechanical in my 3B (on sbc). I ran a 4 row cross flow brass radiator (Modine 347) for years but replaced it several years back with an aluminum 2 row with same dimensions which works much better. Things are a bit tight but it fit. My 3B album photos show some of it, but it is somewhat buried with the York, alternator, and shroud.

Well you can run a straight mechanical. To say any kind of fan isn't really correct. I'd have put a clutch fan on mine years ago, but there's no where near enough room.

My rad in the Jeepster is the same as the CJ5 and I had about as much room as you. I went to a junkyard and grabbed the slimmest electric I could find, from a Dodge Spirit/Acclaim V6. Mounted it to a couple straps running across the rad frame, similar to Patrick's.

As you can see the Spirit fan has no guard on one side, so that part goes where the nose of the water pump is. These fans also have the motor integrated into the fan, not outside which gives more clearance. Cools my 4.3 just fine.

I was thinking the electrical route, but then I remembered a fan that was packed inside the Jeep when I bought it. I took it out this weekend, and if I bolted it on backwards, it might fit. That would be considered a "puller" fan correct? I'm worried there would be some flex in the blades and since the blades would be very close to the belt and alternator I'm thinking that might cause a problem...
I also noticed what appears to be a temp hook-up on the manifold. It's coming out of the front of the manifold, just to the right of the alternator (when standing in front of the Jeep.) It looks like I can connect a lead to it, and run it to a temp gauge. Does that sound correct?
Everyone's tips have been very helpful, thank you all for your time and efforts in this thread.

Hawkes- Great idea with that junkyard fan. I bet those are cheap and plentiful.

Is it a mechanical fan? If so, don't mount it backwards...

I ran the factory fan on mine for years. Then just for giggles I ran this one with a 1" spacer for a while before the radiator/ electric fan. This fan is FLAT on the front. The blades don't protrude past the front mounting face. I used the 1" spacer to get it away from the belt. So, it stuck out 1" plus the thickness of the plastic fan (3/16"?) past the water pump pulley.

it is a mechanical fan. Thanks for the advice, I might've tried it just to see what happened, but I won't now.
The price of that nylon fan works well in my budget! Thanks Patrick!
Also, from the looks of your pics eariler in this thread, it appears as if your CJ is in prestine condition. DId the electric fan work better in the long run?

The electric fan and Mustang radiator have only been in there for a month or so. Works great so far as the fan isn't needed until I sit in traffic for several (or more) minutes. The proof will be trail riding in the summer, but I think it'll be fine.. That plastic Flex a Lite unit worked well...A 3/4" spacer should be enough, I just happened to have a 1". They recommend 1" clearance between the front of the fan and the radiator.

Been running my fans for 3.5 years, still running strong. Hasn't over heated yet.

Someone may have already mentioned it but if you really needed room for a fan couldn't you just swap to the newer style grille that doesn't mount the rad so far back? The type they used on the AMC inline 6 motor.

Just seems like that would be the easy way to gain space.
