My hunting jeep is having some problems and hunting season is apon us. I will give a brief summary. Ever since I rewired the jeep, my key has never been able to shut the jeep off. I pretty much can drive without the key after I get it started. So the other day, I pulled the dash and was looking at the back of the ignition switch and I noticed that the coil wire was connected to the battery terminal. On my rewire kit, the paperwork had it going to the ignition terminal, so I was confused why I put it there years ago. So I switched it, but got the same effect. It started but the key didnt shut it off. I drove it around the block after I gave it a jump because I hadnt drove it in a few weeks and didnt think anything of it.
The next day I tried to start it and there was nothing, and I mean nothing left in the battery. I charged it up and couldnt get it to fire up. It cranks but no fire.
So, I figured it wouldnt hurt for a new battery anyway, and that didnt do the trick either. I then put the wire on the ignition switch back to the original way I had it and nothing either. Now, after being gone all weekend, I came home from work today to try and get her started and no juice in the new battery. I have failed to mention, that all of this time while working on it, I keep the terminals left off of the battery while it just sits here in the garage.
It turns but doesnt fire and for some reason is sucking the life out of a battery with only a few cranks.
Honestly, I have no clue. Please any thoughts because all you guys are a whole lot smarted at this then me.

I don't think it accounts for all of your symptoms, but there are three diodes in your alternator. Diodes act like water check valves with electricity. Current can run one direction through them but not the other. An alternator makes AC current and the diodes turn it into DC. If one of your diodes fails it will backfeed power to your coil even when the key is turned off. I don't understand the specifics of the failure 100% but if you have your key wired correctly and it runs with key turned off it might be a diode.
