Transfer case output shaft shims

Has anyone ran across a t-case not having any shims between the case and the rear bearing cap on a model 18 transfer case? I've been running this t- case for 15 years with no problems and only removed the cap to replace the seal and seal around the the shims, which are not there. End play is within limits. This is the first time I have ever seen one with no shims at all.This is on my old Willys truck so it has no e-brake on it.
