A guy here at work offered me an aluminum Hi-Rise 4 bbl intake for $50. I have been thinking of putting a 4bbl on my Buick 231 V6 and a cam to give the jeep a little more pop......

My question: What is the purpose of a Hi-rise? Would it be a bad coice of intake?

I don't have all the details of it yet....make and model. I think it iss offenhauser....not sure yet.

Any input on this would be great.

I just got a email reply about the intake:

Buick 62- 87 V6 , Weiand 7541 X-Cellerator ,aluminum, single plane, open plenum, single four barrel intake. Power band 1500- 6800 rpm. Cost $211.00, will take $75.00

    Tim,

I have this listed on craigslist. If you want it for $50.00, it’s yours. Go to craigslist, there’s a picture. If you don’t know manifolds or how they work, here is a quick summary. A factory manifold is a 360 degree, which means it has a dual plenum or step looking down from the top. The lower the manifold the closer the carb is to the head. This is for low end power. Would be found on Cadillac’s or heavy trucks. The power range would be from idle to about 3000rpm. The higher you go with the manifold, the more the rpm range and usable power increases. By increasing the height of the manifold, you no longer need the second plenum. Doing away with this makes a 180 degree, single plenum manifold. Another inch on this manifold would take it to the 2500 – 7500 rpm range. On a heavy vehicle these manifold won’t work, they need the low end. But on a light vehicle, it makes them come alive. This should be used with a 500 or 600cfm four barrel. Hope I’ve help. Jerry

    What do you guys think?

If you're mud bogging where you need the top end, sure. Methinks you won't like the loss of low-end torque and driveability from off idle 'til the stated "powerband" (1500 & up). Typically an open plenum manifold is used just as he described, to make power at higher rpm's.

Most single plane open plenum intakes are specifically designed for the top end power. The only one that claims to keep the low end is the Kenne Bell Number One (which I have) and I don't think it's as good as a dual plane Offy.

Specs on that one state 1550 - 6800 rpm power band. That is top end. For the jeep you want it at 1K or lower. The Offenhauser 6035DP is ideal for the jeep.

That's a spread bore as well - Qjet is the carb best for it.
