State police her in Louisiana won't license my jeep unless they can ID a number on the vehicle. It was put together from a couple of, I'm told 1955 CJ5's. I cn't find plates or numbers on the frame. Can you help? I have Pics but don't know how to attach! THANKS, df

Welcome from ga. You should be able to find the vin nr behind the right front wheel on the top of the frame. Some also had the nr on the frame on top at left rear. HTH

I can't find on top of frame on passenger side back of front axle and 4" from back of frame (that's where state policet said it would be). He said they'd help me find it if I removed the cab. I realy don't know if I'll find a number even if I remove the cab!

It is lightly stamped into the frame, not a plate. It will be there but may be covered by dirt/rust/crud. Looks like this-

It will be located within the red circle-

You shouldn't actually have to remove the tub to see it.

    Good luck-

But it can be MIGHTY hard to see! Might have to lightly sand the area, and still use a flashlight. No ID plate on the driver's side firewall?

In any event, the first part of the VIN should be 57548, right fellers? Followed by the rest of the numbers you find.

See the VIN document PDF (see the stick at the top of this forum), there is a diagram in there. :)

I suggest a Scotchbrite, not sandpaper. You don't want to sand it away! A Scotchbrite will remove paint, dirt and rust, but no metal.
