Glad you got it figured out and working. The PJIII thing is worth every bit. You will look back in a year or so and be happy you got it working.

I have one request.....because I have enjoyed this build so much, I don't really want it to end. Will you post some wheeling pictures and make a few comments on what work well and things that you would change for next time. Thank you.

No problem, Ryan. All of a sudden I have some clicking noise coming from the area of the parking brake. At first I thought it was a front wheel bearing. Similar sound, but I eliminated that right off. It's not the CV joint in the driveshaft. I won't be able to pull the drum and yoke until Fri. It could be the rear output bearing or (I'm hoping) the speedo drive gear. I put in a new speedo cable but the speedo doesn't work. Hasn't since I got it back on the road. Hard to believe it's the output bearing as the t-case probably doesn't have 10k miles on it since it was gone through. I used all new bearings (Timken) when I re-did it. But anything is possible. Obviously some higher power doesn't want me wheeling much this year. :(

Hey posi, i'm in late on this build, but i was wondering if you used a hyd clutch setup? And if so, which one did you go with?

It looks like i just found it. It looks like you made a custom bracket and used a pull type slave cylinder. Why did you go with this setup? I ask because i'm running the same motor and exhaust manifold with novak hyd clutch cylinder, and it looks like that manifold puts the exhaust pipe really close to the slave cylinder.

I liked the prices from Wilwood on the slave and master and I wanted enough clearance to run my exhaust inside the framerails. Everything stays tucked in pretty close with the pull-back slave.

PS The clicking from the parking brake area ended up being caused by the speedo cable. Because I boxed the frame the cable had to make too tight of a turn to connect to the output cap. It bound up causing the speedo drive gear to make noise.

Glad it was a simple fix John. With the snow last weekend, are you gonna take Posi wheeling in it? Been once and it was alot of fun. Hard on the jeep tho.....

The snow is already gone from the trail. The snow level was pretty high. Nothing stuck at my house. There's nothing better than snow wheeling though. Trying to get some people together to make a mid-week run to Rubicon Springs this week.

If you end up going, please snap some pics for those of us that live on the other coast!

    Thanks!

Took the Jeep down to Rubicon Springs last Tues. for an overnighter. I'm still not totally "there" with the FI, but it's tolerable and it ran well enough to get me up Cadillac pulling a trailer. I'm posting some pics in Trail Rides in a few. I love the feel of the suspension, but I need a little more up travel. I'm deciding whether to add a leaf to each pack or longer shackles. I have excess angle on the shackles now, so longer shackles would straighten that out a little and give me a pinch more down travel. I'll probably start with some mock ups so I can see how it looks before I make them. My front shackles are about 2" longer than the rears, so I'll start with that dimension and see how it looks. If it's good, I'll only have to re-make shackles for the front. I have an ugly problem to deal with though. On my way out of the trail on Wed I started getting a grating sound from the t-case. Only in Low, quiet in Hi range. It doesn't sound good though. I'm going to drain the oil tomorrow and check it out. I'll be surprised if it doesn't have metal in it. I have a cracked bellhousing that I was going to replace in the Spring, but if I have to pull the t-case I might as well pull the tranny and replce the housing. I already have one I got from Herm.

The trail report is here: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?91991-Rubicon-Springs&p=979672#post979672

Pulled the pan off of the t-case today. Not good news. I don't see anything obvious inside the case, but there was metal in the pan. I took the rear output bearing cap off and the bearing looks OK. I'm guessing it's some of the roller bearings in the countershaft.

My goal for Sunday is to get the case out and diagnosed so I can order the parts on Monday. Since I have to pull the case anyway, I'm going to pull the tranny and replace my cracked bellhousing. Someday I'm going to fess up to how I did that.

I pulled the skidplate, anti-wrap bar, parking brake and driveshafts today so tomorrow I can get right on pulling the OD. If you have never done one, you're not missing anything fun.

Lots of work. You may want to take a close look at the overdrive too. If the nut in the back of the OD is loose, the problems could extend up into the tranny as well. Don't ask me how I know.....I learned the hard way:)

Given what you just went through with your tranny, Jim, I appreciate your sentiment. ;)

Ryan: When I put the OD back in last time I used a little Locktight on the threads as well and the OD is shifting great, so I don't think that's the problem. Plus it's totally quiet in Hi range. It's only growling in Low. It sounds like two pieces of metal rubbing together. At first I thought it was the body rubbing on something. It would come and go. I'm hoping any damage is minimal. I went through this t-case about 12 or so years ago. Used the hardened pin from Novak and all new bearings. But it's seen a lot of trail use in those years. Pics later today, hopefully.

By the way. For the trail I LOVE the spool in the back. No slamming, no banging, just all traction all the time. If I did more street time with the Jeep I'd probably go selectable, but for my use it's great. It is kinda cool chirping the tires in the parking lot at the grocery store while only doing 1 mph.
