a friend of mine has a set of axles off of a 69 cj5.
    they are a 27 and a 44. and 4.88 gears.
he says that they came with factory lockers.
i am thinking that they are trac lock in the front and a power lock in the rear.
am i right? did they put in factory lockers? what are these worth?
they would be very close to my 25 and 44 with 5.38's?
would they be a good buy?
thanks for all the info guys.

I'd guess they are both PowerLocks if from a '69. I'd be suspicious that the front LSD is factory - supposedly they exist, but my guess is that they were quite uncommon.

The rear PowerLock was a popular option in the day. No lockers from the factory AFAIK - only LSDs.

4.88s are a good ratio. Driveable on the highway with tall tires.

    What Tim said.
A good buy? Depends on price and condition, and if you want/ need them.

Mine had the trac loc in the rear D44, I've not poped the front cover yet.

Supposedly Marine Corp M38A1's Jeeps had Powr Lok in both (D25 and D44) from the factory with 5:38 gears;)

I've seen Trac-Lok in a 1969 flanged model 44 rear with 4.89 gears, but that is a rare exception.
Very few will be flanged from 1969. The Power-Lok tapered model 44 is realistic for 1969.

The Model 27 front 4.88 absolutely NEVER had Powr-Lok from the factory.

4.88 is the ultimate ratio if used in series with the WARN O.D.

Why not? What makes the 4.88 different?

so if these's a locker in the front, its aftermarket.
probably a power lock, or a trak lock?
    those are good right?
so if the price is right i should grab these.
    as im open all around.

They simply never offered the Powr -Lok for the 4.88 model 27 front axle.
    They certainly could have.

Neither Powr-Lok nor Trac-Lok are lockers.
They are both limited slip differentials.
Trac -Lok was only used with flanged 44's.
In my opinion the Powr-Lok is superior to the Trac-Lok
The Thornton Powr-Lok fits all Spicer 25 and 27 front axles.
The Powr-Lok also fits tapered and full floarting (modified) Spicer rear axles.

So that includes 4.27 and 5.38..

My Dad has a Powr Lok 27 he bought used from R&P for 4.88.

    I guess I don't understand.

No this does not include other gear ratios nor other models of Spicer axles having a 4.88 ratio.
Only the Dana Spicer 4.88 model 27 front axle.
It never was available with Power-Lok from the factory.

    Who is R&P ?

Powr-Lok can certainly be installed into the 4.88 front Spicer model 27 but the factory never sent them out that way.
If they were ever available they would have been listed in the Universal Parts Lists ( UPL ) and or Universal Parts Catalogs. ( UPC )

The 4.88 ratio Dana 27 front axles are not listed as having been available from Kaiser Motor Incorporated nor from Americajn Motors Jeep Corporation.

But 4.27 and 5.38 use the same carrier.

4.88 was the optional gear ratio for the V6, so it was available.

That is up to you - I also believe the 4.88s are a superior gear setup (run them in mine with the OX lockers and Warn OD). I have only run across 1 other set of them here in CO that I snatched up. I grew up with the 5.38s, grew to love the 4.88s and grab them when I can.

Yes the 4.88 front ratio was an option for all V-6 CJ's
And all of those produced were Dana Spicer model 27's only.

Yes the Power-Lok carrier is the same for all Spicer model 27 front axles from 3.92 through 5.38 ratio.
That statement alone does not indicate that Jeep ever offered all those options.

The 4.88 ratio is extremely desireable when used advantageosly as part within a complete syncronous JEEP system.

Humm, I thought this was about lockers, not LSDs, I was wondering if they ever made a locker for the D27?

According to the books that I have, the front D27 Powr-Lok was only available on the F-Head-equipped CJs; so that would be with either 4.27s or 5.38s. The front D27 Powr-Lok isn't listed as an option for the front of V6 CJs, which would be with either 3.73s or 4.88s. Just my .02.

Ah. So you're saying that a Dana 27 4.88 Powr Lok exists,or can be assembled, but never assembled as such in a factory application.

Correct. Limited slip, at least in the rear, but not a locker.

I did the Rubicon last year in my cj6 with power locks front and rear....4.27 gears....it did AWESOME!!!
I had planned to invest in a real locker up until then, but after the performance on that trip I'm sticking w/ the LSD's
