When I left work tonite I noticed some oil on my axle nut. I kicked it and it moved! I could turn it with my fingers. When I got home I looked up the torque, 150 - 175 foot pounds but when I set it the hole for the cotter pin is centered away from a slot in the castle nut. Can't get it any tighter. Should I back off and pin it or just run at the right torgue with no cotter pin?

Use the cotter pin.. I think you will find the torque from 150 to 175 will get you to one of the slots. The one clossest to the proper torque will do.

Try torquing with different thickness flat washers under the nut. My local nut & bolt has hardened washers for that purpose. That has always worked for me on my tractor.

    :iagree:

Torque and pin are critical - not doing so produces those wild stories about axles blowing up and killing people as the shaft came out...

Torque it to 150, then turn it until the first slot lines up..You won't over tighten it if you do...
Even if you have to use a cheater to get it...

If it was loose, I'd pull the hub, and clean and inspect the taper on the axle and in the hub.

Well I got the drivers side torqued and pinned. Just filed the back of the nut a little to let me make the torque setting. After reading all your replies I figured I better check the pass side... No pin and the wrong size nut stripped so badly it just turned with a wrench. When I took off the wheel after pulling the nut the hub and drum wanted to come with it. I think you guys saved my whole family's bacon tonite. How do you say Thank You for that? Well Thank You Todd

    yikes....
    that's pretty scary to find.
when you have the time, pull those hubs off per Patricks post and check the keyways for cracks.
