Can I use the Distributors vacuum advance with the solex carb? I pulled the Carter because the throttle shaft had enormous amounts of play and I already had the solex (came in a box of parts with the jeep)

I cant find anywhere to plumb the advance line in to a ported source, or does the dizzy need manifold vacuum?

try the threaded hole on the intake runner, the one on the fire wall side. I think that was used with the vacuum wipers, I blocked mine off using a tapered bolt.

My question is, do I use manifold or ported vacuum, one goes up with rpm the other goes down.

So where can I come up with a ported vacuum source on the solex carb?

I don't have the answer to all your questions. Just some of them. R)

Seriously, most F and L-heads I've seen lack the vacuum advance, very few have it, I'd not worry about it if you want to run the Solex. Drop another dizzy in w/o and go.

I'd imagine that it's a lot easier for me to find a ported vacuum source than a new distributor:(

Good idea though, I wonder if the mechanical guts are the same and the vacuum can is added. If so I could run without.

I can't imagine it's that hard to post a WTB in the classifieds here.

    YES

Just what engine are you running here; the L-134 Go Devil ?
Can you identify your present distributor make/ model ?

As you know the Autolite IAT 8H vacuum advance distributor was never standard for any of the CJ models.
The vacuum advance was only used for early Willys PU / SW and also for L/F 134 industrial engine applications.

The Autolite IAT 4008 8H (vacuum advance) is basically the same as an Autolite IAD 4008A (mechanical advance) with the addition of vacuum assist.

Normally you should not install the IAT's having the vacuum advance removed.

The normal Solex replacement carburetor for the L-134 is M-32 PBIC.
That replacement carburetor does not have a ported vacuum source.
You could drill and tap a port into the throttle body or simply use the intake manifold vacuum port.
Either vacuum source wil perform equally well if both sources are below the throttle valve.

But that is manifold vacuum, not ported. The ported source is zero with the throttle closed and goes up while the throttle is opening, opposite of manifold vacuum.

    adams77,
We are currently dwelling in the realm of untested theory.

In order to produce the desired vacuum source I propose that you may be able to precision drill / tap the Solex yourself.

In theory the Vacuum Spark Port is located so that the opening is normally above the throttle valve at idle,
but as the throttle valve opens, the port becomes effectively below the throttle valve.
Therefore when the throttle valve is opened the port recieves almost full manifold vacuum.

I propose you attempt to mimic the Carter W/O vacuum spark port specifications onto your Solex M-32 PBIC throttle body.

I am presently deep in the remote Ozarks. Therefore I am unable to access my Solex M-32 PBIC concerning physical dimensioning. Neither can I access the original Carter W/O documents at this time concerning vacuum spark port specifications.

But as an example... here are the specifications that are for use with the Carter 938S:
    Drill .054" to .056" diameter.
Locate top of port .035" to .045" above top edge of valve with valve tightly closed.

    Hope this helps....

For a guy that is "deep in the ozarks" you sure say a lot of big words.

I was hoping that there was another way instead of drilling into the casting.

    Oh Well !
Just remember I only stated that I have A Solex M-32 PBIC.

I never stated that I recommend that particular carburetor.

If I was you I would likely repair the Carter W/O.

    Thanks,

Why so down on the solex carbs? I have used them on many other vehicles.
