I have a rebuilt F134 engine that I am starting for the first time and I can't get the oil to start circulating. I tried packing the oil pump gears in light grease but it still won't pump. Does anyone have any tricks for getting the oil pump primed? My next question is, can the F134 oil pump be removed and replaced with the engine still sitting in the mounts on a CJ5?

Yes you can remove the pump. I primed mine by taking a large plastic syringes or you could use one of those baby nose sucker things and pushing oil into the hole that the oil pressure gauge hooks to on the back of the engine. it seemed to work well.

I cut the top off a 2-liter pop bottle and poured in a quart of new oil. Dunk the oil pump in it and spin the gear until you have oil pumping up out of the pump and then reinstall it. You should see oil pressure while cranking before you put power to the ignition!

I used a syphon hooked to the oil pressure gauge input and put a quart of oil in before cranking the engine. All seemed to go well. I did not check the prime of the oil pump.

Got it fixed. I wound up having to drop the oil pan to fix the problem. The oil pickup was stopped up. I had cleaned the screen on the pickup but I guess I forgot to check the cast aluminum elbow that bolts to the block. It was clogged with old sludge in the bend.

    Thanks for the follow up.
Makes you wonder how long the elbow has been clogged.
