In the middle of replacing my fuel pump, I noticed what appear to be cracks on the timing chain cover. It looks like a rock or something impacted the cover at some point in time.

Do these look like cracks or is it just dirt/grease stuck in imperfections on the surface of the casting? The cast surface is very rough, so it could be grease I think :?

    Joe,

The pictures aren't showing up for me. I see red X's.

I don't think those are anything to worry about. I seem to recall my timing cover having some cracks like that in the surface as well.

Just small inclusions in the casting.

I was thinking that its just cold shuts on the surface. Really couldn't see the cover cracking that much and still be in one piece.

Fuel pump is in and is pumping fuel to the filter!

Just gotta go get some oil to replace the fuel contaminated stuff in there now and then I'll fire it up :D

Joe, those are actually caused by the release agent they used to use in the die cast mold. The stuff was like wiping vaseline or grease on the mold, the metal would not always burn it off when it was injected and it would leave those little swirls on the surface. Nothing to worry about.
