After looking at my Chilton's book and looking at the steering box, I'm not quite sure I have the factory steering box. Maybe I'm just looking at the wrong diagram. So, I figured I'd put the forum to work for me with helping me identify what I have on my jeep.

This is a 1974 CJ-6. Is this the '74 steering box or a newer addition? Is this a saginaw? Please pardon my ignorance. Judging by the diagrams, it's suggesting it off the newer models.

While you fellas are at it, and considering I was in the shade under the jeep, I figured I'd see if you guys could confirm some things for me, so I snapped a few more pics.

Is this what you mean by factory strapping on the frame?

...and while I got you guys on the ground and under my jeep....

Front differential. Is that the dana 30?

    Rear differential. Dana 44?

Here's my transfer case. Dana 20?

BTW, sorry for clogging up the threads with all the pics and questions. If the mods could hold off on deleting this post, I'll get it cleared off as soon as I figure out what I have here on my jeep. Thanks.

Steering box looks just like what came on my 74. Don't think it's been changed. Other questions in order: Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes.

Everything looks right to me. Factory manual Saginaw steering. Factory frame strapping. Factory axles and transfer case.

Put the Chilton's on your shelf and get the Factory Manual.

interseting, I've never heard of frame strapping before. Does it stiffen the frame appreciably or is it more of a skid plate type function?

The CJ-6s have straps on the frame. More for strength than anything, AFAIK. It's in tension along the bottom frame rail, so I presume it has to do with load carrying primarily. Should not affect the stiffness of the frame (ie twistiness) much.

No need to apologize. We like to see and comment on this kind of stuff. Pictures of member's Jeeps are always welcome.

I have library of pictures of my '75 CJ-6 here if you want to compare: http://www.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/~reese/ResizedJeepIPics/
