Dauntless HEI conversion

    Iv got a 67 cj-5 with a dauntless 225. Hei appears to be a common upgrade? Couldnt seem to find any info in a quick search whats all involved in the swap? Also what engines / vehicles do i get the distributor from. Depending on the price id like to get new but willing to get a used one from the junk yard. Thanks :v6:

    The easiest upgrade you can do to your 225. You just have to pay close attention to the details of how the dist goes in.

    I did the HEI conversion, if I had to do it again, I would go pertronix.

    $90 dollars, a few screws and a piece of wire and you are rockin and rolling. My petronix works terrific. I would never do points again! I have never done the HEI conversion but I thought the Petronix was really simple.

    A new pickup ring for a odd fire hei from a 75 apollo costs 12 bucks. A complete 231 hei distributor at pull-a-part is 32 bucks. Being able to buy parts off the shelf at every parts store in the world-PRICELESS!

    very easy to carry parts, points and condenser, on the trail in case of failure.

    Google "hei odd-fire 225" It is very simple once you understand what you need to do. Eliminates ballast resistor, points, condensor, and all the associated hang-ups. May not need to hook up the vacuum advance however depending on the size of your carb and keeping the motor from advancing too much timing.

    Look at the DUI Distributor upgrade too. (DUI = Davis Unified Ignition). Claims to pack 50,000 volts and drops right in, everything you need is in the cap, 1 wire hookup if I remember correctly. Its like $300+ for the 225 V-6, but I haven't heard a single person that has gone this route bitch about anything about it besides the slightly higher initial cost. Probably the route I'll take when money allows.

    IMHO the DUI isn't worth it. Just do a stock HEI conversion or Pertronix.

    IMO you're not running a high-performance street/strip machine that will benefit from the recurving, etc. that the DUI offers. Just based on what I've seen between my 225 stock HEI/MSD and MOP's DUI HEI/MSD, there's no difference but the price. ;)

    well i couldnt find a distributor at the junk yard so i just orderd a stock points type it was only 45$. Ill keep my eye out for a hei though. My main objective here is to figgure out why its not running good and theres nothing left in question but the distributor. my brother had a dui on his nova and that thing was crazy. Once we had a plug wire off and the spark arked about a foot to the fender!

    You know you can convert a non-computer controlled HEI to an odd-fire HEI if you can't find one in the junkyard that is OF, right?

    yup. I couldnt find any. all the older cars i saw had v8s. Cant always get lucky. I havnt seen any old jeeps there in quite a while either. maby people are getting the idea that theyre worth not scraping

    you can get a remanufactured cardone from rock auto for $116.00. I've been running one of these for the last 13 years. all i've done in that time is a couple of caps and rotors, it's never let me down. back in 1996 they cost $69.00

    Im in the same boat, I read all the articles and looked at the DUI distributors. From What Ive gathered and please correct me if Im wrong. All the 231 HEI distribtors as long as its not computer controled that I would find at the junk yard are the same the only difference is the odd or even cap?
